Details: Home of Lieutenant-Governor Charles Joseph La Trobe and his family (1839 - 1854). La Trobe was a great plants-man, and had a love for all things botanical (both European and Australian flora) and for the natural world in general. The garden has been reinstated with species and plants available in the 1840s and 50s and was awarded the Victorian Community History Award for Historical Interpretation in 2014. A visit includes a tour of the Cottage and a talk on the garden when requested by horticultural groups. The garden is looked after by volunteers who participate in working bees on a seasonal basis, in addition to regular care of the many heritage plants. Melbourne’s early history in living colour.
